Dear Ani,

When we find them, we are their only hope.

I wake to the sound of my phone ringing. It’s still dark outside, and my body fills with dread. Late-night calls rarely bring good news.

It’s another koala joey—found alone, emaciated, and barely hanging on. We don’t know what happened to her mum; she was most likely trying to find a safe tree for them to rest in, but those safe places are disappearing fast.

The joey is lucky she wasn’t attacked by a dog or hit by a car. With IFAW’s support, we do everything we can at Mosswood Wildlife to give her a fighting chance. But the truth is, most koalas—especially joeys—don’t survive. They arrive starving, dehydrated, and with nowhere safe to return to.

Every rescue is a race against time, against exhaustion, and against the limits of our resources. But your gift today could help us reach the next koala in urgent need.

This crisis is not new. For years, we’ve watched koala habitats vanish, and we know the fire season looms again. Orphaned joeys may recover in care—but with no forest to return to, where will they go?
